Dowsing & Radiesthesia Glossary

Your definitive guide to the terminology of energy healing, divination, and pendulum work.

A

Aura

The subtle electromagnetic field that surrounds all living things. Dowsers often use pendulums to detect holes, blockages, or energetic shifts within the aura.

Ask Again

A common label on dowsing charts used when the energy is unclear, the timing is wrong, or the question needs to be phrased differently.

B

Bovis Scale

A tool developed by French physicist Antoine Bovis to measure the life force energy (biophotons) of objects, locations, or organisms. A neutral reading is typically around 6,500 units.

Bobber

A dowsing tool consisting of a flexible wand or coiled wire with a weight on the end, used for detecting energy flows and answering questions.

C

Chakra

A Sanskrit word meaning "wheel." These are the seven primary energy centers in the human body. Dowsing charts are frequently used to assess which chakras are open, closed, or overactive.

Cleansing

The process of removing stagnant or unwanted energy from a dowsing tool (like a crystal pendulum) using salt, smoke, sound, or sunlight.

Concentric Rings

A structural design in dowsing charts where multiple circular layers are nested within each other, allowing for multi-layered or cascading questions.

D

Divining Rods

Typically L-shaped or Y-shaped tools used to find water, minerals, or energy lines (Ley lines). They operate on the same ideomotor principles as the pendulum.

Dowsing Chart

A visual guide or map (usually circular or semi-circular) that provides specific options for a pendulum to swing toward, translating movements into meaningful answers.

E

Eco-Mode (Ink Saver)

A feature in the Dowsing Chart Maker that converts all colors to high-contrast black and white and removes heavy fills to minimize printer ink consumption.

Energy Field

The invisible field of vibration and information that surrounds and permeates physical matter, which dowsing tools are designed to interact with.

F

Frequency

The rate at which energy vibrates. Dowsing is often described as a method of "tuning in" to the frequency of an object or answer.

G

Geopathic Stress

Energetic disturbance caused by underground water, mineral deposits, or fault lines that can negatively affect human health. Dowsers are often called to "clear" these areas.

H

Half-Circle Chart

A 180-degree dowsing chart, ideal for binary choices (Yes/No) or simple scales, providing wider slices for easier reading of the pendulum's swing.

I

Ideomotor Response

A psychological and physiological phenomenon where a person makes small, unconscious muscle movements. This is the scientific explanation for how a pendulum swings without conscious effort.

L

L-Rods

A pair of L-shaped dowsing rods that cross when detecting a signal or energy source.

Ley Lines

Aligned "lines of power" across the landscape that dowsers believe carry high concentrations of electromagnetic or spiritual energy.

M

Map Dowsing

The practice of dowsing over a map or drawing to locate water, missing persons, or energy points from a distance.

N

Neutral Position

The starting state of a pendulum, held steady over the center of a chart, waiting for a signal to move.

O

Oracle

A source of wisdom or divination. While the dowser acts as the channel, the dowsing chart serves as the interface for the oracle's message.

P

Pendulum

A weighted object suspended from a cord or chain. It acts as an amplifier for the ideomotor response, allowing the subconscious to communicate visually.

Programming (a Pendulum)

Establishing the "language" of your pendulum by asking it to show you what a 'Yes,' 'No,' and 'Maybe' swing looks like for you personally.

R

Radiesthesia

The sensitivity to "radiations" or vibrations from any source. This is the formal term for the science of dowsing.

Radiating Slice

The wedge-shaped sections of a dowsing chart that hold labels. Their size and angle are determined by the number of labels in a ring.

S

Spiral Mode

A specialized dowsing chart layout in the Studio that renders labels along a Golden Ratio (Fibonacci) spiral path. This mode is ideally suited for chronological dowsing, ancestral tracking, or exploring evolutionary cycles.

Subconscious Mind

The part of the mind that is not currently in focal awareness. Dowsing is widely considered a bridge to accessing the vast information stored here.

T

Transmutation

The process of changing one form of energy into another, often used in dowsing when "clearing" negative energy from a space.

V

Vibration

The oscillating motion of energy. Every answer or object has a unique vibrational signature that the dowser seeks to match.

W

Witness (Dowsing)

A sample of the substance or a photograph of the person/location being dowsed for. The witness helps focus the dowser's intention on a specific energetic target.

Y

Y-Rod

The traditional dowsing tool made from a forked branch (usually hazel or willow), which dips down or snaps up when water is found.
