How aura colours are used in practice

In energy-work traditions the aura is described as a field of light around the body whose colours shift with mood, health and attention. Colour meanings in this tradition are conventions, not measurements: books and teachers vary, and the same colour can read as vitality in one source and tension in another. The list above gives the commonly cited meanings, so adjust it to the system you work with.

There is no scientific evidence that a human aura can be seen or measured. So-called aura photography uses hand sensors that record skin conductivity and temperature and then maps them to colours, which makes it a biofeedback display, not a picture of an energy field. This chart is a reflective tool, a way to name how you feel, and not a diagnostic one.

How to use this aura color chart

  1. Choose your question. Useful ones are “Which colour is dominant in my aura today?” and “Which colour would support me right now?”
  2. Hold the pendulum over the centre of the chart and take a few steady breaths.
  3. Ask the question and note the colour the pendulum swings towards. Ask once more to confirm.
  4. Look up the meaning in the list above and ask yourself whether it fits. If it does, you could wear, look at or meditate on that colour.
  5. To work with another person or a room, ask their permission first, and treat the result as a conversation starter and not a verdict.

Frequently asked questions

What do the colours of the aura mean?

Meanings vary by tradition, so use the list above as a guide and adjust it to your own system. For a longer walk-through, including how to dowse the colours of a person or an object, see our Aura Color Chart guide.

How is an aura chart different from a chakra chart?

A chakra chart names the energy centres along the body, each with a traditional colour. An aura chart is about the colours of the field around you, which are said to change with mood and circumstances. Many people use the chakra chart to ask where, and the aura chart to ask what.

Can I dowse someone else's aura?

Only with their permission. Keep the answer gentle and tentative: it is a prompt for a conversation, not a reading of that person.
