Hawkins Map of Consciousness Chart

David R. Hawkins mapped human consciousness on a scale from 1 to 1,000, from Shame at 20 to Enlightenment at 700 and above. This chart puts 14 of his levels on one wheel with their calibration numbers, so you can dowse where a feeling, a belief or a situation sits on the scale.

What each level stands for

Each level is followed by the emotion Hawkins paired with it in his published table.

Where the Map of Consciousness comes from

David R. Hawkins (1927-2012) was an American psychiatrist and author. In Power vs. Force (1995) he described a Map of Consciousness: a logarithmic scale from 1 to 1,000 on which emotions, attitudes and states are given “calibration” numbers. He described the levels below 200, from Shame to Pride, as ones that drain life, and the levels from 200 upwards as ones that support it, with Courage at 200 as the turning point.

Hawkins's method of calibrating was applied kinesiology, or muscle testing. Someone holds an arm out, a statement is made, and how well the arm resists pressure is read as true or false. He drew on the behavioural kinesiology of John Diamond. Dowsers adapted the idea to the pendulum: instead of testing arm strength, the pendulum answers whether something calibrates above or below a given number.

This chart shows 14 of the 17 levels in the published map. Desire (125), Neutrality (250) and Acceptance (350) are not on the wheel. Open the chart in the Studio if you want to add them.

Good to know: Hawkins's calibrations have not been independently verified. Muscle testing has not been shown to be reliable in controlled trials, and a pendulum is open to the ideomotor effect, small unconscious movements that follow your expectations. Many readers value the map as a vocabulary for inner states and not as a measuring device. Do not use calibration numbers to rank people or to make medical, legal or financial decisions.

How to use this Map of Consciousness chart

  1. Prepare first: drink some water, ground yourself and check your state with the Operator Readiness chart linked below. Ask permission with the Golden Gateway chart if you are asking about something beyond yourself.
  2. Check your yes/no responses with a statement you know is true and one you know is false.
  3. Name the subject clearly, for example “my attitude to this decision” or “how I feel right now”.
  4. Hold the pendulum over the centre and ask: “Where does this calibrate on the map?” Note the level the pendulum swings towards.
  5. To narrow it down, ask first whether it is above 200, then ask for the level. Write down the answer and the date.
  6. Run the Ego & Bias check if you notice you want a particular result, and repeat on another day before you trust a pattern.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Hawkins Map of Consciousness?

It is a scale from 1 to 1,000 described by Dr David R. Hawkins in Power vs. Force (1995), which assigns calibration numbers to emotions and states of mind, from Shame at 20 up to Enlightenment at 700 and above.

What does 200 mean on the scale?

In Hawkins's framework 200, the level of Courage, is the point where integrity begins. Levels below it are described as draining and levels above it as supportive. It is his framework, not an established measurement.

Does a pendulum give the same result as muscle testing?

They are different tools and there is no evidence that they agree. Hawkins's own calibrations used muscle testing, so a pendulum answer should be read as your own reflection, not as his method.

Can I calibrate other people, books or websites?

Some practitioners do, but the results are unverified, so avoid using numbers to judge people or to decide anything important. If you ask about another person, ask their permission first.

Can I change this chart?

Yes. Choose Customize in the Studio to open this chart in the free Dowsing Chart Maker. Rename or reorder the sections, change colours, fonts and layout, add layers, then export as PNG or PDF. No sign-up is needed.
